UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to call July 4 election

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will call a summer General Election, likely on July 4, according to the BBC and other UK media outlets.

Reports suggest he will formally ask the King to dissolve parliament later on Wednesday.

Speculation mounted when Sunak refused to rule out the move during Prime Minister's Questions earlier in the day.

“As I have said repeatedly [...] there is, spoiler alert, going to be a general election in the second half of this year,” Rishi Sunak said during Prime Minister’s Questions.

Sky News has confirmed Sunak will give a statement at 5 pm. A parliamentary recess due next week is widely expected to be cancelled as ministers force through remaining legislation, with government sources now expecting parliament to be dissolved next Thursday, The Times has stated.
