Britian’s more agile and unified approach across all of its stakeholders to secure its energy ambitions, address the cost-of-living crisis, and meet net-zero targets, a new report claims.
A study by Robert Gordon University suggests the UK has to install at least one new turbine every day to maintain the current size of the offshore and green workforce at 150,000 by 2030.
In particular, the North Sea must be repurposed into a “world-class, multi-energy basin” to ensure long-term energy security for the UK.
Without that, Scotland, particularly Aberdeen, would be heavily affected due to its concentration of offshore jobs.
Additionally, the UK must continue extracting around 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily, and offshore wind generation capacity must rise from 15GW in 2023 to 40GW by 2030.
Currently, oil and gas production is projected to decline by 40% by 2030.
Professor Paul de Leeuw, from RGU, noted the UK’s unique opportunity to shape a new energy future but stressed the need for faster planning, consenting processes, and grid access.
