Rishi Sunak has been urged to reverse his plan for North Sea oil and gas by a group of cross-party MPs.
Three conservatives were among the 50-strong group, which wants an end to new North Sea licences and a new climate envoy to be appointed.
Caroline Lucas, the Green party MP, who signed the letter from the all-party parliamentary group on climate change, said: “When the prime minister entered Downing Street he promised to protect the environment.
“But instead he has U-turned on once-leading climate policies, approved the largest undeveloped oilfield in the North Sea, and weaponised green policies.
“If the government is to secure any success at future critical international negotiations, then the prime minister must heed the demands of cross-party parliamentarians.”
Support for the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance is another demand for the group with countries such as France, Spain, and Denmark already signatories.
BGOA is pushing for the phasing out of all fossil fuel production.
The three Tories include Tracey Crouch, a former sports minister; and Pauline Latham, the MP for Mid Derbyshire neither of whom will stand at the next general election.
