Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and chief scientist of OpenAI, is departing from the company which has been a key player in the AI industry surge, particularly known for its groundbreaking ChatGPT chatbot.
CEO Sam Altman acknowledged Sutskever's crucial role in the company's success. Jakub Pachocki, previously the director of research at OpenAI and lead developer of GPT-4 and OpenAI Five, will succeed him as chief scientist.
Sutskever, who has been instrumental at OpenAI for nearly a decade, revealed his departure on X, hinting at a new, personally significant project he will soon unveil.
His tenure included pivotal moments such as the brief firing and subsequent reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman, during which Sutskever expressed regret over his involvement.
His decision to leave follows the announcement of a new AI model, GPT-4o, and comes at a time when ChatGPT's global user engagement is rebounding.
