Week Ahead: S&P could hit all-time high with Walmart earnings on deck

Markets are poised for significant movements as key economic indicators and corporate earnings reports take center stage this week.

Economic data points, including the Consumer Price Index (CPI), Producer Price Index (PPI), and retail sales figures, will provide critical insights into inflationary pressures and consumer spending trends.

“Things could get interesting” this week, according to Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets.

The S&P 500 index is approaching its all-time highs, fueled by positive momentum after surpassing its 50-day moving average. Analysts foresee potential catalysts that could propel the index even higher this week, with a clear path toward retesting its peak levels.

“Will this week’s inflationary data give us the positive momentum to break higher or will we form a near term double top and pullback yet again?” asks Woods in his weekly newsletter.

“As one who has believed that the market will chop around for a few more weeks, this level could prove us wrong and catapult us into an early summer rally. Let’s see how the week ends before jumping to a conclusion that the bull is about to roll on.”

Investors are closely monitoring inflationary data, particularly the CPI, which is expected to moderate slightly from previous figures. The Federal Reserve will scrutinize these numbers ahead of their June meeting, Woods writes, with market sentiment hinging on whether inflation trends align with expectations for interest rate adjustments.

Retail sales data will offer insights into consumer spending patterns amid inflationary pressures, shedding light on whether recent weaknesses indicate broader trends or are confined to specific brands or sectors.

In the spotlight for earnings reports this week are companies like Home Depot, Cisco, John Deere, and Walmart.

Home Depot's guidance will be closely watched for indications of shifting consumer spending habits, with potential ripple effects across the sector, as will Alibaba, given its historical impact on stock performance.

Additionally, all eyes are on Nvidia (NVDA), with its earnings report scheduled for May 22, marking one of the most anticipated reports of the season.
