Google DeepMind unveils AI that can model all molecules

Google DeepMind has introduced AlphaFold 3, a cutting-edge AI model that enhances the understanding of cellular components and their interactions, which could revolutionise disease treatment including cancer.

Published in Nature, this third instalment advances its predecessors by providing detailed insights into how biological structures form and interact at a molecular level. Developed alongside Isomorphic Labs, AlphaFold 3 extends its analytical scope beyond proteins to include DNA, RNA, and disease-indicating ligands.

This technology significantly accelerates the drug discovery process, enabling researchers to generate accurate structural predictions quickly, a task that traditionally could take years.

Despite the advanced predictive capabilities of AlphaFold 3, the generated molecular structures will still require experimental validation and clinical trials.

The model's developers have made its functionalities largely available for academic research, promising to transform hypothesis testing in labs and potentially doubling the productivity of pharmaceutical research.

Google DeepMind is part of the Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) search empire.
