Three of the UK’s largest app-based takeaway firms have agreed to extra security checks in a crackdown by the government on illegal working.
Deliveroo PLC (LSE:ROO), Uber Eats and Just Eat will all tighten up their apps to stop the misuse of substitutes or people picking up work using another delivery rider's credentials.
Riders currently are self-employed and can use substitutes, but the new measures mean these will now have to be registered and prove they have the right to work in the UK.
Deliveroo has already started to roll-out roll out the system.
According to the government, 42% of riders stopped by an enforcement team last year were working illegally.
Michael Tomlinson, the Minister for Countering Illegal Migration, said: “Illegal working puts their customers at risk, drives down wages and defrauds the taxpayer. It is vital that we shut down any loophole that allows it to happen.”
Shares in Deliveroo were down 1.2% at 132.2p.
