Barclays PLC (LSE:BARC) is reportedly a front-runner to buy the General Motors credit card business from Goldman Sachs.
Talks have begun and are expected to result in a sale by the summer, according to the Wall Street Journal, with the cards linked to around $2 billion in outstanding balances.
Other potential US buyers were said to be US Bancorp and Bread Financial, but these are reported to be behind Barclays in the running.
Goldman is also reported to be winding down its credit card partnership with Apple amid a wider step back from consumer banking space in the past couple of years.
Barclays generated income of £5.3 billion from its Consumer Cards and Payments (CC&P) division last year.
The UK lender acquisition activity so far this year has included completing the purchase of specialist mortgage lender KMC last month, including a £2.2 billion portfolio of mortgages.
An agreement is also in place to buy Tesco Bank, with the grocer's retail banking business including credit cards, unsecured personal loans, deposits and operating infrastructure.
