Lidl offers cash to find sites as it targets hundreds of new openings

Lidl is set to expand its footprint in the UK by opening hundreds of new supermarkets.

New stores are planned to be opened in areas such as Leeds, Edinburgh and London, with the discount supermarket also on the hunt for new areas to open larger stores.

Anyone who can identify a suitable location for a supermarket that has easy access, good traffic/foot flow and over 100 parking spaces has a chance at receiving a finders fee.

Should the location be used by Lidl, the finder will receive 1.5% of the total freehold purchase price or 10% of the first year’s rent.

If a finder is to find a site bought for £1.5 million, this would result in the finder receiving £22,500.

Lidl plans to increase its British estate from 960 stores to 1,100 as part of a wider expansion plan till the end of 2025.

Last week, it was revealed the German discounter had upped its market share to 8% from 7.6% a year prior, moving it nearer to fourth-largest supermarket Morrisons.

Richard Taylor, Lidl UK’s chief development officer, said: “We’re proud to have achieved record market share this month. We have also been the fastest-growing bricks and mortar supermarket for the past seven months in a row.”

Lidl GB boss Ryan McDonnell also said he doesn’t believe the group has “reached the peak in market share development among discounters.”
