Facebook parent Meta facing EU disinformation probe

Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META, ETR:FB2A, SWX:FB) is facing formal proceedings from the European Union over concerns that the tech and social media giant is not adequately countering Russian disinformation ahead of the EU elections.

According to a Financial Times report, the EU is particularly troubled by Meta's decision to phase out CrowdTangle, a tool used for tracking disinformation and election-related content.

A spokesperson for Meta said: “We have a well-established process for identifying and mitigating risks on our platforms. We look forward to continuing our cooperation with the European Commission and providing them with further details of this work.”

New EU regulations require tech companies to actively monitor and mitigate risks of election interference, with Meta under scrutiny for its compliance.
