Chancellor to hold summit in bid to boost stock market

Jeremy Hunt has organised a summit with some of the UK’s top bosses in a bid to rejuvenate the London Stock Exchange amid a growing exodus of British stocks.

Bosses at some of Britain’s largest and most influential private companies including Monzo and Starling Bank have been invited to attend the meeting at the Chancellor’s weekend residence Dorneywood next month.

Set to take place for a full day on May 16, the Treasury will speak with companies which could potentially list on the LSE, particularly those in the fintech and biotech industries.

Bim Afolami, the City minister, and the prime minister’s chief business advisor, Franck Petitgas, will be in attendance along with government officials and LSE executives.

An invitation to the summit said: "[We will] discuss the UK's capital markets and how they can support innovative, high-growth companies such as yours to achieve your growth ambitions.

"The UK's capital markets play a key role in our economy: driving growth, creating jobs and facilitating investment.

"The government is committed to ensuring that the UK remains the best place for companies to grow, and is already taking forward an ambitious programme of reforms to improve the competitiveness of the UK."

Concerns surrounding the dwindling of the stock exchange have grown in recent months, with research having found the LSE was shrinking at its fastest rate ever recorded.
