Covid vaccine maker Moderna Inc and partner Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD) have initiated a phase III trial in the UK for the world’s first "personalised" mRNA vaccine, mRNA-4157 (V940), targeting melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Tailored to each patient's unique genetic tumour markers, the treatment aims to train the immune system to recognise and eliminate cancer cells, potentially preventing the cancer from returning.
Uses technology similar to that of Covid vaccines, the treatment is being administered at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) in combination with pembrolizumab, a drug that also boosts the immune system's ability to fight cancer.
This trial, part of an international effort with trials also running in countries like Australia, is not just focused on melanoma but includes tests on lung, bladder, and kidney cancers.
Early results are promising, suggesting the therapy could significantly reduce the likelihood of cancer recurrence with manageable side effects.
