Tesla layoffs hit German and Chinese staff too

The layoffs announced by Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) this week will also impact workers in Germany and China, according to reports.

Roughly 300 temporary workers in Germany were let go at the end of their contracts, the electric vehicle maker said on Thursday, as part of the cost-cutting plan to axe 10% of its workforce announced at the start of the week.

"These are not layoffs of Tesla workers," a spokesperson at the company's Berlin gigafactory (pictured) told media. Previous reports suggested around a quarter of the company's 12,000 workers in Germany would be affected.

Some China's sales staff have also been laid off, sources have also told the newswire.

Before Tesla told staff about the layoffs on Sunday, it employed 140,000 people globally, including approximately 20,000 in China, where it faces intense local competition.
