The railway industry is in the midst of a digital revolution fueled by rapidly evolving artificial intelligence (AI) technologies presenting a significant opportunity for companies to enhance operational efficiency and meet industry need.
The sector is poised to leverage AI advancements, potentially unlocking $13 billion to $22 billion in annual impact globally, according to a recent McKinsey report looking at the surge in AI adoption across industries.
The United States has one of the largest railway networks in the world, with approximately 140,000 miles of track. Railways play a crucial role in freight transportation in the US, with freight railroads moving approximately 40% of the nation's freight, including commodities such as coal, grains, chemicals, and automobiles.
Passenger rail services are also provided by Amtrak, the national passenger rail service. Amtrak operates more than 300 trains daily, serving over 500 destinations across 46 states and three Canadian provinces.
High-speed rail projects have been proposed in various regions of the US, and while the country currently does not have a comprehensive high-speed rail network like those found in countries such as Japan or France, ongoing discussions and initiatives to develop high-speed rail corridors in certain regions are underway, aiming to improve connectivity and reduce travel times between major cities.
With the complexity of AI implementation, railway companies are turning to a vast ecosystem of global partners and vendors that stand ready to provide technical expertise and support.
Israel’s Rail Vision Ltd (NASDAQ:RVSN) is spearheading this transformation with its pioneering systems leveraging electro-optic sensors, AI, and Deep Learning to enhance railway operations globally.
With a team of over 50 employees, Rail Vision is committed to paving the way for a safer and more efficient rail future. Their advanced obstacle detection and classification technology enable the detection of objects on and along tracks from distances of just over a mile, operating in real-time and in various weather and low light conditions.
By addressing critical issues such as obstacles, accidents, high operational costs, and capacity constraints which harm the business continuity, Rail Vision’s aim is to transform railway operations in the US, and across the globe.
As CEO Shahar Hania outlined in a recent comment to shareholders, 2023 was a milestone year for the company.
“While we faced challenges and were presented with new business opportunities, it was a year marked by significant progress and milestones for Rail Vision,” Hania told investors.
For the MainLine product, the company sold a $1.4 million order to Israel’s state-owned railway company and received a $500,000 order for a MainLine system from a Latin American mining company.
The company also sold its ShuntingYard product to a US Class 1 operator and to Loram, a global leader in railway maintenance.
Now, the group is hard at work expanding its footprint in the US, having forged partnerships with industry leaders like Nvidia and other US-based industry players.
The company's AI-driven Switch Yard System has garnered attention from Class 1 freight rail companies, with orders for evaluation and testing to enhance safety protocols.
Alongside its two core plug-and-play products, the company now offers the Track Rail Analysis & Condition Knowledge Intelligence Tool, or TRACKIT, a powerful web application that is transforming the way rail operators monitor and manage their systems.
TRACKIT is designed to provide a comprehensive, real-time view of each active system's statistics, health, and location. The tool archives one-minute video clips from every incident, allowing operational managers and other stakeholders to review historical data for all deployed systems. The TRACKIT solution is offered as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model, making it accessible and scalable for rail operators of all sizes.
Rail Vision's engagement with a US-based leading railway technologies company for the distribution of its MainLine and Switch Yard systems underscores its commitment to expanding its presence in North America. By leveraging a wider network of partners and distributors, Rail Vision seeks to amplify its reach and accelerate the adoption of its innovative products across the continent.
AI adoption is gaining momentum, but few railway companies have implemented multiple use cases at scale. However, the potential benefits of AI for railway companies are substantial, with the capacity to generate significant value through revenue management solutions, infrastructure optimization, and cost efficiencies.
Realizing these benefits requires dedicated capabilities, talent investment, and clear alignment with business objectives.
“We believe that with $3.1 million in cash at the end of 2023, plus the recent $8.7 million that we received in fundraisings and warrant exercises in the first quarter of 2024, we are well positioned to continue to innovate, grow, and become a leader in the railway safety industry,” Hania told investors.
“In addition to our business progress, we continue to innovate and have announced the next generation of our AI-based system. Looking forward, we are energized and more committed than ever to driving forward the future of railway safety and efficiency, as we position Rail Vision to reach the forefront of this vital industry.”
