John Lewis has appointed the former head of Tesco's UK business as its next boss.
Jason Tarry takes over as chair of the employee-owned retailer in September when Sharon White steps down.
Tarry, who will be the partnership’s seventh boss, said it would be a "great privilege" to lead the business.
White is stepping down after a troubled five years at the helm of the department store and Waitrose owner that has seen ferocious competition, losses, staff cuts, lower bonuses and an end to the “never knowingly undersold” slogan.
Rita Clifton, deputy chairman and chair of John Lewis's nomination committee, said: "The board extends its huge thanks to Sharon for successfully leading the partnership through one of the most testing periods in its history - first Covid and then the cost-of-living crisis.
"She has faced the toughest decisions and overseen the partnership's financial recovery; we are in good financial health with a return to profit, and have a strong balance sheet with record investment planned this year."
Last month, the group returned to profit, making £56 million compared with a £234 million loss the year before, though the staff bonus was not restored.
Tarry, who worked at Tesco for over 33 years, added "The partnership is unique and I've long been an admirer of the employee-ownership model, its values and partner-led customer service."
