K-pop fans force Hyundai to ditch metal deal over environment concerns

Hyundai Motor Co has terminated an aluminium purchase agreement from an Indonesian supplier after a campaign against the deal by K-pop fans.

The South Korean car giant had signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Adaro Minerals Indonesia.

Aluminium smelting is known for its high energy consumption, which generates considerable carbon emissions when coal is used as a power source.

Calls for the carmaker not to buy metal produced using coal power by a climate campaigner were backed by many thousands of K-pop fans.

The decision to end the agreement was warmly received by Kpop4Planet, a climate activist group.

The group has been vocal in its campaign against Hyundai's aluminium supply agreement, adding it would continue monitoring the car group's material sourcing practices, emphasising the importance of sustainable manufacturing in the fight against the climate crisis.

Both Hyundai Motor Co and PT Adaro Minerals Indonesia said they would pursue alternative strategies that align more closely with global sustainability goals.

“It is the victory of thousands of K-pop fans who genuinely care about the climate crisis, especially in Indonesia,” Kpop4Planet told Reuters.
