Talon Metals primed to capitalize on demand for US nickel: analysts

Talon Metals Corp. (TSX:TLO, OTC:TLOFF) and its Tamarack project in Minnesota is ideally suited to capitalize on increasing demand in the US for locally sourced, high-grade nickel, according to analysts at Stifel.

The analysts have resumed coverage on the stock with a ‘Buy’ rating and a C$0.50 price target.

With Talon’s current share price of C$0.14, this implies a return of about 250%.

The analysts wrote in a note to clients that they see an opportunity in the mid to long-term outlook for nickel amid higher elective vehicle demand, tax incentives favoring domestic supply, and with nickel added to several critical minerals lists.

“The risk to this thesis is Indonesia’s supply flooding the market, however, we highlight the Tamarack project’s location, high grades, and attractive margins providing the ability to withstand variations in the nickel price,” they wrote.

“The Tamarack project is in the first quartile of cash costs compared to peers, providing attractive margins that are resistant to metal price volatility.”

Among the factors they see driving upside potential for Talon and setting it apart from its peers are its partnerships, notably its supply agreement with EV maker Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA, ETR:TL0).

“Additionally, Talon has secured a US$20.6 million grant in support from the Department of Defense. This grant essentially cuts the cost of exploration by half for Talon in Michigan and Minnesota,” the analysts pointed out.

“Lastly, Talon has secured an approximately US$115 million cost-share grant from the Department of Energy to build a battery metals processing facility in North Dakota.”

Stifel’s analysts also believe there is further value to be unlocked at the Tamarack project through exploration, culminating in additions to the current resource estimate for the project.

“Recent success at the drill bit has defined multiple areas of interest for potential resource growth and highlights the strong regional potential within the Tamarack Intrusive Complex,” they wrote.

“In 2024, Talon is targeting four key zones in Minnesota (the Raptor Zone, Deep MT Target, CGO East Expansion and the Main Zone) and planning to begin drilling in Michigan in May 2024.”
