St James's place downgraded, price target almost halved - here's why

RBC Capital has downgraded its recommendation on St James's Place PLC, shifting its rating to 'sector perform' from 'outperform', alongside swingeing price target reduction to £5 from £9.50.

It follows the £426 million provision made by the wealth manager for potential client refunds.

The Canadian bank's valuation now incorporates a 60% likelihood of a £1 billion dilution event, an assessment reflecting the heightened risk profile due to the provision for complaints and the resultant liquidity constraints.

Despite SJP's strong capital position, the central liquidity appears tighter, with a £295 million available revolving credit facility highlighted as a key buffer.

RBC remains optimistic about St James's Place's long-term future, citing the resilience and attractiveness of its partnership model.

The firm's strategic initiatives under new CEO Mark Fitzpatrick were commended for positioning the business for sustainable leadership in the increasingly regulated UK wealth market.

The bank has adjusted its earnings estimates for St. James's Place, accounting for lower flows and increased provisions for complaints. These adjustments have led to a more conservative outlook on the company's financial performance over the next few years.

In afternoon trading, the stock was barely changed at 460.3p.
