Week Ahead: FOMC meeting, Reddit IPO, and Nvidia's GTC Conference on deck

This week, the financial markets face a blend of the routine and the less certain, with the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting and a tech IPO taking center stage amidst recent minor setbacks in the S&P 500.

Jay Woods, Chief Global Strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, points out that the index's slight downturn—less than 0.38% over the past two weeks—marks the first consecutive weekly declines since October, suggesting a cautious atmosphere among investors.

The FOMC meeting on Wednesday is particularly noteworthy. Following hotter-than-expected inflation reports, the financial community is keen to decipher any subtle shifts in the Fed's outlook on interest rates.

So, this meeting is not just about the decisions that might be made but also about reading between the lines: Will there be hints of a change in policy direction, or will the status quo prevail?

“Clearly a pause is in order for the fifth consecutive meeting, but what does it mean for meetings going forward?” asks Freedom’s Woods.

“Will Jay Powell’s usual talk of ‘one data point at a time’ continue or will he acknowledge things are getting sticky. Will his slightly dovish tone turn slightly hawkish?”

The Fed meeting isn’t the only show in town this week. There is a mix of excitement and apprehension surrounding Reddit's IPO on Thursday.

That's because the online platform's decision to go public, aiming for a valuation of roughly $6.4 billion, is effectively the canary in the coal mine for tech companies and other businesses looking to float.

Success should shift the logjam of listings that have been on the back burner, while failure....well we all know what this means!

“The significance of this IPO will not be lost on all those unicorns anxiously waiting to test the market,” says Woods.

“If Reddit’s debut goes smoothly and is well received by the street, look for a flood of IPOs to jump into the waters.

“Conditions continue to be favorable as the market sails along near all-time highs. A strong showing by Reddit could see an opening of the IPO pipeline.

“Other high profile names that are rumored to possibly go public in 2024 include Fanatics, Shein, Skims, Plaid, Klarna, Vuori, Discord and Chim.”

Sticking with the tech sector, Nvidia's GTC Conference is set to begin Monday, with investors and tech enthusiasts alike eager to hear from CEO Jensen Huang.

Nvidia's journey, with its stock up 79% year-to-date, reflects its pivotal role in the AI revolution - providing the processing required to propel the latest advances.

Also in the pipeline are earnings reports from Nike, FedEx, and Micron.
