Nasdaq hit with two-hour technical glitch

Nasdaq Inc (NASDAQ:NDAQ) has announced that a technical glitch, which affected connectivity for over two hours, was resolved on Monday morning.

The exchange, which lists shares in some of the US’ largest technology firms, had started facing issues at around 4.55 am Eastern Time.

Though little detail was given about the severity of the problems, Nasdaq said issues related to its matching engine software, which matches buy and sell orders.

Nasdaq’s latest issue marks the second technical glitch in a matter of months, with such problems threatening to dampen sentiment and attract regulatory scrutiny.

A handful of stocks on the exchange had displayed unusually wide spreads, indicating the difference between buyers’ bids and askers’ selling prices, as per Finom Group president Seth Golden.

"The 'ask' was below the bid consistently since 5 am. Eastern Time for a majority of stocks,” Golden said, sometimes by as much as US$1 a share.

“The Nasdaq stock market has resolved its earlier matching engine issues and all systems are operating normally,” the firm said on Monday.

“Nasdaq will provide a full postmortem when available,” it added.
