TikTok under review by Canadian government

TikTok Global became the subject of a national security review by the Canadian government back in September but it didn’t disclose this publicly until now.

“This is still an ongoing case. We can't comment further because of the confidentiality provisions of the Investment Canada Act," a spokesperson for Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said.

"Our government has never hesitated to (take) action, when necessary, if a case under review is found to be injurious to Canada's national security."

The review is believed to be focused on the growth of the social media app, but government spokespersons refused to add any further detail.

Information about the review was not placed online as it is typically done because the information is confidential and protected under the Investment Act Canada.

It comes after the US House of Representatives passed a bill that forces TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to divest from the app or risk facing a comprehensive ban in the States.

Some 352 House members on both sides of the aisle voted to approve the bill with 65 against, giving ByteDance 165 days to divest or face a ban from all app stores and web hosting services.

“Yesterday's actions in our view represents a very slippery slope around social media restrictions, First Amendment rights, and potential retaliatory actions China can head towards the likes of Apple and Tesla and US Big Tech,” Wedbush said of the matter.
