Google chatbot barred from providing election responses

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)-owned Google has implemented restrictions on its AI chatbot Gemini, barring it from answering election-related inquiries, in a push to mitigate misinformation risks amid a big year for elections.

Announced via a blog post, Google initially applied the change in India, where elections are starting in April.

Gemini, Google's counterpart to the popular ChatGPT large-language model, offers text responses and image generation but will now limit responses to certain election queries as part of Google's broader election integrity strategy outlined last December.

The move aims to prevent controversies like the recent 'Woke AI' debacle that forced Google to apologise for providing inaccurate image creations of historical figures.

google's decision reflects the growing scrutiny over generative AI, with countries like India demanding regulatory compliance for AI tools, highlighting the challenges tech companies face in balancing innovation with responsible use.

More than 50% of the global population will head to the polls this year.
