PyroGenesis Canada Inc. (TSX:PYR, OTCQX:PYRGF) told investors its fumed silica reactor (FSR) pilot plant is on track for commissioning in the second quarter of 2024 as it has reached another development milestone.
The company, in partnership with HPQ Silica Polvere, a wholly-owned subsidiary of HPQ, has developed an eco-friendly process to convert quartz into fumed silica: a moisture-absorbing white microstructure powder used most often as a thickening agent, anti-caking agent and stabilizer.
The company said that with all major equipment now on site, the construction phase of the 50-ton-per-year FSR pilot plant is progressing.
It is being constructed within a dedicated area of PyroGenesis’ facilities spanning 4000 square feet with 30-foot high ceilings, with the plant itself having an approximate footprint of 50 feet by 30 feet.
“We are rapidly moving forward with the fumed silica reactor pilot plant construction, as we recognize that numerous industries will benefit from what we believe is a truly innovative approach to producing one of the most in-demand materials,” PyroGenesis CEO P Peter Pascali said in a statement.
“Conventional fumed silica processes, which rely on silicon metal as raw material, not only have a significant carbon footprint of around 9.5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of fumed silica, but also present complex process challenges which include but are not limited to, using hazardous materials.”
