Airbnb Inc (NASDAQ:ABNB, ETR:6Z1) is banning the use of indoor security cameras in its listings globally as it continues to “prioritize the privacy of the community”.
Historically, venues available on the accommodation rental app were allowed to fit security cameras in areas such as hallways and living rooms if the host had disclosed it beforehand.
The policy has now been simplified so that cameras are no longer allowed inside, irrespective of their location, purpose, or any prior disclosure.
Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnerships, Juniper Downs said: “Our goal was to create new, clear rules that provide our community with greater clarity about what to expect on Airbnb.
“These changes were made in consultation with our guests, Hosts and privacy experts, and we’ll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community.”
It comes a month after the UK government said hosts listing short-term lets must receive planning permission and adds to a growing stack of legislation globally which is making it tougher for landlords.
While Tuesday’s change will only affect a small portion of Airbnb listings, the group is also introducing tighter rules on the use of outdoor security cameras and devices such as noise decibel monitors.
Hosts must now disclose the use and location of any outdoor cameras and cannot be used to monitor indoor spaces or areas outside where there is an expectation of privacy.
Changes will be implemented at the end of April.
