Supermarkets hike pay as living wage increases in April

John Lewis Partnership, Co-op, and Tesco PLC (LSE:TSCO) have all unveiled hikes in pay for their workers ahead of the living wage rising in April.

Store workers at both Waitrose and John Lewis will see their hourly pay increase to £11.55 in April, with those working in London seeing a jump to £12.89.

Meanwhile, Co-op will up the pay of around 37,000 workers by 10% to £12 an hour, with those within the M25 receiving £13.15.

Tesco also said it was increasing its hourly pay for workers by a pound to £12.02 next month, with London worker pay rising to £13.15.

In April, the National Living Wage will increase to £11.44 per hour and will cover 21 and 22-year-olds for the first time in its history.

Other supermarkets such as J Sainsbury PLC (LSE:SBRY), Asda, Lidl, Aldi and M&S have said they will up wages.

Both Lidl and Sainsbury’s upped pay in March, while Aldi enacted a pay increase in February.

Marks and Spencer Group PLC (LSE:MKS) said it will increase its workers’ pay from April, while Asda, which is undergoing a debt-induced shakeup, said it will increase wages to £11.44 in April before it rises to £12.04 in July.
