Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META, ETR:FB2A, SWX:FB) said it has fixed a "technical issue" which led to its social media platforms Facebook and Instagram not working.
Users across the globe were unable to use the apps or the websites for around two hours on Tuesday.
While people were able to access and log in to the platforms, many suffered error messages and were unable to refresh their feeds.
Meta said it was sorry for the issues and stated that it had attempted to resolve the problem as fast as possible.
The outage was believed to have affected multiple countries, according to Downdetector.
Facebook is estimated to have around three billion active users per month, while Instagram is en route to hit the 1.4 billion mark by the end of 2024.
Threads, the company's recently launched rival to Twitter/X, also reportedly experienced outages, however, Whatsapp, Meta's messaging app, was left unaffected.
Shares in Meta are flat in after-market trading, having closed on Tuesday 1.5% lower.
