Siemens to build new £100mln signalling facility in Wiltshire

Siemens has announced plans to invest £100 million in a new manufacturing site in Wiltshire.

The German train group said the new centre will be on the site of its existing facility at Chippenham, which has been used to manufacture railway signals for more than a hundred years.

Siemens bought the 120-year-old site in 2013 from Westinghouse Brakes and it expects the new facility to open in 2026 to provide signalling for the upgraded east coast mainline.

Rob Morris, joint chief executive of Siemens Mobility UK and Ireland, said: “This investment is a strong commitment to Chippenham and our country.

“Siemens Mobility’s Chippenham site, along with our 30 sites across the country, has been transforming rail, travel and transport in Britain – and it will continue to do so with cloud-based rail technology connecting the real and the digital worlds, digitalising rail.”

Another new Siemens site at Goole will open this year manufacturing trains.

Wednesday’s Budget will include a pledge of £360 million as part of plans to boost the UK’s manufacturing sector.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said: “We’re sticking with our plan by backing the industries of the future with millions of pounds of investment to make the UK a world leader in manufacturing.”

Labour’s shadow business secretary, Jonathan Reynolds dismissed the plans as more “recycled announcements”.
