Sony Group Corp (NYSE:SONY)-owned PlayStation has unveiled plans to cut around 900 jobs globally as the gaming company re-evaluates a handful of ongoing projects.
Cuts will stretch to around 8% of the unit’s headcount, with studios in the likes of London and California set to be affected.
“The PlayStation community means everything to us, so I felt it was important to update you on a difficult day at our company,” Sony Interactive Entertainment chief executive Jim Ryan said.
“We have made the extremely hard decision to announce our plan to commence a reduction of our overall headcount.
“Employees across the globe, including our studios, are impacted.”
PlayStations London studio in Soho, best known for the SingStar series of games, is set to be closed entirely under the move.
The Insomniac Games and Naughty Dog studios in California will also face major cuts, while smaller reductions take place elsewhere.
“These are incredibly talented people who have been part of our success, and we are very grateful for their contributions,” Ryan added.
“However, the industry has changed immensely and we need to future-ready ourselves to set the business up for what lies ahead."
PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst explained cuts came as the company looked to take a “step back” and assess its “business needs”.
Some projects which were already underway will be scrapped as a result.
