Immunic expects financial stability through 2025 as MS clinical programs advance

Biotechnology company Immunic Inc (NASDAQ:IMUX) disclosed its financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2023, alongside significant clinical advancements, marking a pivotal year for the firm.

Immunic CEO Daniel Vitt lauded the company's strides in 2023, citing the successful completion of a three-tranche private placement worth up to $240 million.

"Immunic made remarkable progress throughout 2023, and these achievements were punctuated by the successful three-tranche private placement of up to $240 million, which we announced last month,” Vitt said in a statement.

“Our ability to execute this transaction, with a group of top-tier, existing and new investors, we believe affirms the enormous value inherent in our two advanced clinical programs."

In the fourth quarter, Immunic unveiled interim biomarker analysis results from its Phase 2 CALLIPER trial of vidofludimus calcium, its lead asset targeting nuclear receptor-related 1 (Nurr1) activator.

The data revealed promising outcomes in patients with progressive multiple sclerosis (PMS), demonstrating clear separation from placebo in serum neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels.

The encouraging results were observed across all subpopulations, including advanced secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS), indicating significant unmet needs in the multiple sclerosis (MS) landscape.

Immunic said it anticipates top-line data from the CALLIPER trial in April 2025, which, if positive, could position vidofludimus calcium as the first oral treatment option for advanced SPMS.

The company's phase 3 ENSURE program, supported by the recent financing, is expected to undergo an interim futility analysis later this year, with readouts anticipated in the second quarter of 2026.

In addition to advancements in its MS program, Immunic presented positive results from the phase 1b clinical trial of IMU-856, an orally available modulator targeting SIRT6, in patients with celiac disease.

The data, showcased at prestigious medical conferences, demonstrated meaningful improvements over placebo across key dimensions of celiac disease pathophysiology.

Immunic is now gearing up for Phase 2 testing of IMU-856 in ongoing active celiac disease (OACD), with potential applications in other gastrointestinal disorders under consideration.

Financially, Immunic reported increased research and development (R&D) expenses for the twelve months ended December 31, 2023, driven by external development costs related to clinical programs and personnel expenses.

However, the company noted higher income and decreased net loss compared to the previous year, with a strong cash position of $46.7 million as of December 31, 2023, further bolstered by approximately $75 million in net proceeds raised in January 2024.

With these funds and ongoing clinical progress, Immunic expects to sustain its operations into the third quarter of 2025.
