Wyze Labs apologies after camera glitch shows customers' homes

Wyze Labs has apologised for a breach in its camera security that allowed the homes of at least 13,000 customers to be viewed by other people.

David Crosby, co-founder, last week said that fourteen cases had been identified but now that number has ballooned to thousands.

Set up in 2017, private company Wyze admitted the breach in an email to customers that also pointed the finger at web hosting provider AWS, owned by Amazon.

“The outage originated from our partner AWS and took down Wyze devices for several hours early Friday morning.

“If you tried to view live cameras or Events during that time, you likely weren’t able to. We’re very sorry for the frustration and confusion this caused.”

Reports said Wyze noticed the problems when it tried to bring the cameras back online and were caused by “a third-party caching client library” that was recently integrated into its system.

Wyze added that 99% of its customers were unaffected.
