FTSE 100 opens down; Barclays rallies on buyback and cost-cutting plans - Market Report

The FTSE 100 saw red this morning following a climb to near six-month highs on Monday.

Barclays was among reporters, with shares in the bank soaring on plans to return £10 billion to shareholders in the coming years but to also cut costs through an operational overhaul.

Holiday Inn owner IHG also climbed as the market opened, on its own plan to ramp up shareholder returns and chase higher margins.

Plus500 posted results well ahead of forecasts, with the futures broker’s promise of increased buybacks prompting its shares higher.

And finally, elsewhere, brewer BrewDog made headlines on news that its complaint against the BBC over unfair treatment had been thrown out by Ofcom.
