Nintendo shares plunge on Switch 2 delay reports

Shares in Nintendo Co crumpled almost 9% as shares traded for the first time after weekend reports that the new version of its Switch console will be delayed until next year.

The Japanese games colossus has been telling games publishers that the Switch 2 console will be delayed until the first quarter of 2025, specialist media reported at the weekend, pushing back the scheduled release of late 2024.

Moving the launch back a few months means it should still be within the Kyoto-based company's coming financial year.

Since its launch in 2017, there have been more 132 million Nintendo Switch consoles sold.

Shares dropped 8.8% to below ¥8,200 in early Tokyo trading on Monday, which was the biggest drop in over two years, before recovering to ¥8,356 later in the session, a fall of just under 6%.
