Great Republic Mining eyes vanadium bounty at historic gold mine site

Porcher Island, situated off the coast of Prince Rupert, is primarily accessible by helicopter due to its offshore location. Known for its high anomalous levels of titanium and vanadium, the property has garnered interest despite previous limited demand for vanadium.

A past gold mine site is now drawing attention for its potential vanadium resources, and Canadian junior Great Republic Mining (CSE:GRM) is getting set to prove that potential.

A sprawling 3,122-hectare property, historic concentrations at the site have shown promising grades of vanadium ranging from 0.34% to 0.84% V2O5. The property holds promise for expansion in various directions and benefits from convenient infrastructure, being located just 39km from the deep-water port of Prince Rupert. A recent field program in 2019 involved extensive aerial surveying and rock sampling, further bolstering the property's appeal for potential development.

Great Republic Mining (CSE:GRM) CEO Fred Davidson called Porcher Island a “surprisingly exciting” property. “You always take these properties with a grain of salt, but so far, we haven't been able to disprove it,” Davidson told Proactive. “At this point in time, it's an early-stage project, but it's certainly gone beyond that first level of first pass.”

Vanadium, a versatile transition metal, has applications in several industries. Its primary use lies in strengthening steel, where it enhances structural integrity, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance, particularly in the construction, aerospace, and automotive sectors. Additionally, vanadium-based batteries, such as vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), are gaining prominence for grid energy storage due to their long lifespan and high efficiency.

China is the largest producer of vanadium, followed by Russia and South Africa, with notable deposits also found in Brazil and Australia.

With the growing demand for vanadium, exploration efforts have intensified at Porcher Island, supported by a significant magnetic anomaly indicating the presence of vanadium.

“With the grades we're seeing, we're probably going to have to be fairly aggressive about (exploration),” Davidson said.

“Vanadium right now is in short supply. Most of it is produced by people you don't want to associate with. I think it's going to attract some attention.”
