Norsk Titanium develops nickel-based superalloy for use by US Navy

Norsk Titanium (OTCQX:NORSF) announced that it has developed a nickel-based superalloy Inconel 625 for US Navy applications requiring a material that is high strength and resistance to corrosion.

The company said that, under a contract with Bechtel Plant Machinery, it has adapted their Rapid Plasma Deposition (RPD) processes for Inconel 625.

Norsk and Bechtel Plant Machinery continue to work together to develop the deposition parameters and heat treatment process needed to produce additively manufactured Inconel 625 with material properties equivalent to legacy castings and forgings.

Bechtel Plant Machinery is developing new manufacturing processes for Inconel 625 to deliver cost and schedule savings to their customers and to develop alternative sources of supply for crucial materials, the company said.

Norsk told investors it sees the addition of nickel superalloys and maritime applications as a key part of its long-term growth strategy, along with its core commercial aerospace titanium business.

“This initial effort is an important first step in opening the nickel superalloy market to our additive process,” Norsk Titanium (OTCQX:NORSF) Vice President of Commercial Nicholas Mayer said in a statement.

“We look forward to taking the learning from this effort, and applying it to specific Naval applications.”

Norsk Titanium is a global leader in metal 3D printing through value-added metal parts using its Rapid Plasma Deposition (RPD) technology and 700 MT production capacity, offering reduced raw material usage, energy consumption, and lead times compared to traditional forming methods.
