SSR Mining shares tank as landslide hits Çöpler mine in Türkiye

SSR Mining shares plummeted by more than 50% after a landslide at its part-owned Çöpler gold mine in eastern Türkiye is believed to have trapped at least nine workers underground.

The company said it suspended operations at the site following a significant "slip on the heap leach pad" that occurred at approximately 2.30pm local time on Tuesday.

Turkish officials told the media that a landslide had hit the gold mine trapping at least nine workers underground.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said search and rescue personnel were on site, with rescuers from neighboring provinces assisting.

The mine, 80% owned by SSR Mining and operated by Anagold Madencilik, is located in east-central Türkiye, about 1,100 kilometers southeast of Istanbul and 550 kilometers east of the country’s capital Ankara.

It had been operational since 2010 and processing ore through oxide and sulfide plants via heap leach and pressure oxidation respectively.

SSR Mining’s US-listed shares were down 52.7% at US$4.60 while its Toronto-listed shares had shed 52% at C$6.23 shortly before noon on Tuesday.
