Poolbeg Pharma’s Laura Maher discusses leading clinical innovation - ICYMI

In a recent discussion with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion, Laura Maher, the newly appointed vice president of clinical operations at Poolbeg Pharma PLC (AIM:POLB, OTCQB:POLBF), shared insights into her new role, her extensive background in clinical research, and her vision for Poolbeg's future.

With a rich history of achievements, including a pivotal role in the development and approval of Filsuvez for Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) at Amryt, Maher brings a wealth of experience to her position at Poolbeg.

This Q&A highlights Maher's responsibilities, her approach to clinical program development, and her excitement for Poolbeg's projects in cancer immunotherapy and cytokine release syndrome.

Stephen Gunnion (SG): Can you describe your role and responsibilities as VP of Clinical Operations at Poolbeg Pharma?

Laura Maher (LM): As VP of Clinical Operations, I'm in charge of planning, developing, and managing Poolbeg's clinical programs. This involves leading a range of activities to progress our assets through all development stages. It's a role that necessitates both internal collaboration within Poolbeg and with external service providers, aiming to secure high-quality data.

SG: Reflecting on your achievements at Amryt, how do you see your experience influencing your work at Poolbeg?

LM: At Amryt, I played a key role in developing Filsuvez, the first treatment approved for EB, overseeing the largest EB trial to date. This experience, particularly navigating the complexities of regulatory approval processes with the EMA and FDA, has equipped me with a deep understanding of both patient and regulator perspectives. Although Poolbeg's goals differ, this background informs my approach to trial management, emphasising the planning and value maximisation of our data.

SG: Could you share more about your background and how it has prepared you for this role?

LM: My career began in clinical research after a stint in radiation therapy, driven by a passion for research I discovered during my final year project. With a research master's degree and diverse roles across academia and small pharma companies, including regulatory affairs and clinical operations, my journey through different sectors has given me a broad experience base, which I find invaluable in my role at Poolbeg.

SG: What attracted you to join Poolbeg, and what are you most excited about in this new role?

LM: I've always been drawn to the dynamic environment of small pharma companies. Poolbeg, reminiscent of the early, growth-oriented days at Amryt, presented an exciting opportunity. I'm thrilled to reunite with former colleagues and to delve back into oncology, particularly with projects like POB001 that show promise in cancer immunotherapy and cytokine release syndrome. The potential to make a significant impact on patient care is what excites me the most.
