Super Bowl 2024 most watched broadcast since Moon landing

Super Bowl 2024 was the most-watched TV broadcast in US history since the Moon landing nearly 55 years earlier.

An average of 123.4 million Americans tuned in to watch the Kansas City Chiefs claim their third Super Bowl win in five years after they dispatched the San Francisco 49ers in overtime.

Preliminary figures for the final put it slightly behind Apollo 11’s historic Moon landing in 1969, which is believed to have been watched by between 125 and 150 million people.

Taylor Swift, who was in attendance to watch her boyfriend and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, is believed to have helped boost figures by bringing her predominantly female fanbase to the sport.

Debate is underway over how much the pop star influenced the viewer figures but one flash poll by Numerator found that 20% of viewers were in favour of the Midwestern team due to Swift’s relationship with Kelce.

Of the total viewers, 112 million were believed to have watched through the CBS channel, while the other 11.4 million watched via Paramount+, Nickelodeon, Univision, CBS Sports, and NFL’s digital channels.

A record 202.4 million are believed to have tuned in to part of the game, data from Nielsen revealed.
