Delivery staff for takeaway giants Uber Eats and Deliveroo have announced a strike for Valentine’s Day, claiming payments for their work are “shocking”.
Action will take place between 5 pm and 10 pm on Wednesday with the target to to earn at least the minimum wage, one group told the BBC.
Delivery Job UK said: "Our request is simple: we want fair compensation for the work we do. We are tired of being exploited and risking our lives every day.
Costs for deliveries range from £2.80 to £3.15 say the couriers, who want that to rise to at least £5.
In a statement, Deliveroo said: "Riders always earn at least the national living wage, plus vehicle costs, for the time they are working with us, though the vast majority earn far more than this," it said.
"Riders are also automatically insured for free, covering them if they are in an accident or injured while working and receive income protection if they are unwell and cannot work."
Shares in Deliveroo rose 2% to 121.9p.
