Metals One PLC (AIM:MET1) said that its drill programme and the use of historic data had helped it identify 'economically important' mineralisation reminiscent of Talvivaara, one of the largest nickel mines in Finland.
Its breakthrough results came from the R1 Hook target, within the Black Schist Project, also in Finland, which is host to nickel, copper, cobalt, and zinc (Ni-Cu-Co-Zn).
The exploration efforts have unveiled significant intersections of mineralised black schists across all eight diamond drill holes, marking a pivotal moment in the company's quest to expand its resource base in the region.
In a detailed report released Monday, Metals One highlighted the successful interception of mineralised black schists in each drill hole, showcasing not only the richness of the site but also its geological continuity with the company's existing R1 Resource.
This continuity bolsters the prospect of future resource expansion, setting a positive trajectory for Metals One's operations.
Among the notable findings, Hole RAU0002 revealed a 14.7-metre intercept of mineralised black schists starting from a depth of 50 metres, featuring concentrations of 0.18% nickel (Ni), 0.01% copper (Cu), 0.01% cobalt (Co), and 0.57% zinc (Zn).
Similarly, Hole RAU0003 encountered an 11-metre intercept from 199.5 metres depth, with mineral compositions of 0.22% Ni, 0.01% Cu, 0.01% Co, and 0.55% Zn. These results underscore the high-grade potential of the R1 Hook target area.
Further elevating the project's prospects, the drilling confirmed a synformal structure indicative of significant mineralisation potential to the east. This discovery has prompted Metals One to extend its current permit area in the eastward direction, aiming to capitalise on the identified potential.
"Leveraging new and historical insights and data, the Metals One team is pleased to identify this economically important Talvivaara style of mineralisation," said chief executive Jonathan Owen.
"The resulting prospectivity model developed by the team significantly reduces discovery risk as we continue to target high-quality critical battery metal resources across the Kainuu Schist Belt."
The R1 Hook Drilling Programme was initially designed to validate the structure's capacity to host Talvivaara-type Ni-Cu-Co-Zn mineralisation. Talvivaara, located just 63 kilometres north of the R1 Hook target, stands as one of Europe’s largest and most cost-efficient producers of critical battery metals.
Metals One's findings suggest the presence of similar mineralisation at the R1 Hook target, hinting at the vast untapped potential of the region.
With a total of 1,551.2 metres drilled, the exploration team focused on what appeared to be a fold structure to the east of the company's R1 Resource. The most promising thickness and grades were intercepted on the eastern limb of the main R1 Hook fold.
The confirmed synformal nature of this limb, which dips steeply to the south, suggests significant further mineralisation potential beyond the current permit boundaries.
In response to these encouraging results, Metals One has secured a reservation for the area known as Kirkkosuo.
The company plans to conduct a limited diamond drill programme to explore the extension of the structure and mineralisation, aiming to further delineate the scope of the Black Schist Project.
