Sainsbury's cash plans under scrutiny at Wednesday's strategy day, says broker

Sainsbury's cash plans and how it is going to use its strong balance sheet will be on investors’ minds at Wednesday's Strategy Update Day, suggests analyst Clive Black at house broker Shore Capital.

“No doubt the group’s shareholders will be interested in future priorities for the firm, including capital allocation.”

Black adds that while second-guessing what might be said at these events is 'not wise', he expects chief executive Simon Roberts to outline broad plans for the period covering April 2024-March 2027.

“Under Roberts’ leadership, Sainsbury has been focusing upon its Food First strategy, Brands that Deliver, Save-to-Invest programme and through this work the evolution of a very strong balance sheet.”

“The strength of Sainsbury’s balance sheet becomes increasingly relevant when set against the high levels of leverage and normalised base rates evident across UK retail.”
