CBI settles legal row with ousted former boss Tony Danker

Influential lobby group the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has settled its legal dispute with former director general Tony Danker following his dismissal in April 2023.

Danker was forced out of the CBI following accusations of sexual misconduct in the workplace, allegations which Danker said had “totally destroyed” his reputation.

“The CBI has today settled legal action brought against the organisation by Tony Danker after his dismissal in April 2023,” said a spokesperson for the CBI.

The CBI said it had agreed to an “undisclosed settlement with Mr Danker”.

“The CBI board also reiterates that Mr Danker is not associated in any way with the historical allegations reported in the media concerning matters which pre-date his tenure at the CBI and rejects any such association.”

Though Danker offered apologies and acknowledged he had made some staff feel "very uncomfortable" during his time at the CBI, he distanced himself from separate rape allegations made at the time.

The CBI was put into full-on crisis mode last April following Danker’s dismissal.

A large-scale exodus of members ensued after further allegations of rape culture emerged from the CBI, with Aviva, Phoenix Group, NatWest, John Lewis and other corporates handing in their badges.

Former CBI president Brian McBridge stepped down in May as part of a culture change within the business lobby group.

City veteran Rupert Soames was named as the next president of the CBI in December.
