Multiple states in the United States posted record-breaking monthly marijuana sales in December, rounding a strong year for cannabis sales as adult use markets expanded.
Maryland, which opened its adult use market on July 1, 2023, set yet another monthly record for recreational sales, having done so every month since its launch.
Recreational sales were $61.5 million, above the previous month’s $55.9 million, and medical sales were $35 million.
For the full year, Maryland’s total cannabis sales were $796.2 million, made up of $331.8 million in recreational sales and $464.5 million in medical sales, according to data published by the Maryland Cannabis Administration.
Connecticut, which opened up its adult use market in January 2023, saw record total cannabis sales of $27.5 million in December, topping the previous month’s record of $25.7 million.
Adult-use sales were $17.1 million and medical sales were $10.3 million in December.
For the state’s first year of adult use, its combined recreational and medical sales were about $274 million.
It was not only states with newer adult use markets that saw strong cannabis sales during the holiday period.
Illinois, which launched recreational cannabis sales four years ago in January 2020, saw total sales of $153.9 million last month, including a new record $117.9 million in recreational sales.
For the year, the state’s total cannabis sales were just under $2 billion, including $1.6 billion in adult use purchases.
