Ondine Biomedical Inc (AIM:OBI, OTC:OBIMF) has presented new data that shows its Steriwave Nasal Photodisinfection System effectively reduces nasal pathogens without harming the nasal microbiome, marking a major advancement in such targeted treatments.
Key findings presented at the SPIE Photonics West conference show that Steriwave achieves a 99.9+% reduction in bacterial cells and species in the nose, which is a common reservoir for bacteria.
This reduction is maintained for at least 24 hours, with the nasal microbiome returning to its original diversity and quantity within a week.
Such a rapid recovery contrasts sharply with traditional antibiotics like mupirocin, which can alter the nasal microbiota for over six months, increasing infection risks.
Steriwave's superiority lies in its ability to decolonize the nose efficiently and potently while minimising long-term disruption to the microbiome, Ondine said.

The research, led by Ondine's director of research and development, Dr Caetano Sabino, involved 35 healthy volunteers and focused on the nasal microbial response to Steriwave treatment.
The presentation at SPIE Photonics West, titled 'Microbiome Analysis of Photodynamic Nasal Decolonisation', was delivered on 30 January.
