Loungers ranks as largest listed restaurant chain

Loungers PLC (AIM:LGRS) holds the largest estate out of any London-listed restaurant, industry data found.

Lounge, the group’s leading brand, has 211 sites in operation in the UK, making it the seventh largest restaurant chain, research from magazine Restaurant found.

The café/bar/restaurant/hybrid celebrated the group’s 250th site opening on Monday after it opened Pionero Lounge in Rochdale.

It also has 36 Cosy Clubs and three Brightside roadside venues in operation.

Sandwich maker Subway took the number one crown, boasting around 2,175 sites, benefiting from its franchise model, which has allowed it to open in venues of all shapes and sizes.

Following up in second, third and fourth are fast food kings McDonalds (1,405), KFC (1,016) and Burger King (537).

Whitbread’s Beefeater was the second largest listed brand, with 175 sites.

However, in May last year, the Premier Inn owner said it would be putting the brand up for sale to focus on the budget hotel – although no buyer has been found yet.

In 11th is Wagamama (165), which is owned by TRG, but was taken private late last year after private equity firm Apollo Global Management (NYSE:APO) purchased the company for over £500 million.
