HANetf's head of research shares 2024 trends, highlighting equal-weighting, defence and uranium

HANetf's head of research shares 2024 trends, highlighting equal-weighting, defence and uranium

HANetf head of research Tom Bailey joined Proactive's Stephen Gunnion with insights into the ETF market for 2024, following a remarkable performance in 2023.

Bailey emphasized the dominance of a few major companies, dubbed "The Magnificent Seven" (Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta/Facebook, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla), which significantly influenced the major indices' performance in 2023. This concentration in market cap-weighted indices has led to a shift in investor interest towards equal-weighted ETFs to mitigate concentration risk.

Highlighting the geopolitical tensions and their impact on the market, Bailey introduced the 'Future of Defence UCITS ETF' (ticker: NATO), focusing on conventional and cyber defence companies from NATO or NATO Plus member countries. This product aligns with the growing need for responsible investment in geopolitically sensitive sectors.

Furthermore, Bailey discussed the rising interest in uranium due to energy security concerns and the shift towards low-carbon energy sources. He mentioned the 'Sprott Uranium Miners UCITS ETF' (ticker: URNM), which offers exposure to uranium miners benefiting from the increasing demand for nuclear energy.

Overall, Bailey's insights suggest a 2024 ETF market characterized by a move towards equal weighting, a focus on sectors influenced by geopolitical tensions, and a growing interest in sustainable energy sources like nuclear power. These trends underline the evolving nature of ETF investments and the importance of diversification and responsible investing in today's market.
