Luxury premiums surge alongside car and buildings cover

Costs of insuring the most expensive household items have jumped by 24% over the past twelve months, according to new research.

High-end items such as computers, watches, musical instruments and jewellery now cost an average £302 to insure, up from £243 at the end of 2022 said comparison site Confused.com.

Policies with high-end items cost £108 more than those without, said the website.

Even so, there has been a surge of interest to insure these items, found the research, with a 55% rise in enquiries over the past year.

Values of items insured have also been rising, with the average now £3,919 against £3,877 a year ago.

Helen Phipps, at Compare the Market, said: “Households should be careful not to underestimate the value of any expensive single items.

High inflation means some possessions may now be worth more than the single item limit, so the policy will only partially cover the cost of a replacement.”

Confused.com follows research a report last week that car insurance premiums registered their highest-ever rise over the past year, climbing by 67% according to Consumer Intelligence.
