Tata Steel has reportedly firmed up plans to close the two blast furnaces at the country’s biggest steel works at Port Talbot.
Some 3,000 jobs are at risk from the closures, amounting to three-quarters of the site's workforce, with Sky News reporting an announcement on cuts could be made tomorrow.
Both blast furnaces at the site will be closed, according to reports, with these being replaced by electric arc furnaces to cut costs and emissions.
A funding package from the treasury worth up to £500 million is also reportedly set to be handed over to Tata, in exchange for the company injecting £700 million.
“The steel unions met today with a senior Tata Steel delegation led by Koushik Chatterjee and the company responded to the multi-union plan laying out an alternative decarbonisation strategy for Tata Steel UK,” The National Trade Union Steel Coordinating Committee said in a statement.
“We will be communicating the outcomes of the meeting to our members in the first instance, as is right and proper, and we will make a further more detailed public statement in due course.”
This could include industrial action, with an announcement from Tata on job losses due as early as Friday, once staff have been informed.
