"It makes for quite a sombre outlook overall for the markets" — OptionsDesk

"It makes for quite a sombre outlook overall for the markets" — OptionsDesk

OptionsDesk broker Sebastian Blanco speaks to Thomas Warner from Proactive about a challenging start of the year in the world's financial markets, emphasising the weakness in the FTSE 100 and its implications.

Blanco highlights the 1.5% day-on-day fall in the value of the FTSE 100 on Wednesday, marking its weakest day since August, influenced by Chinese economic slowdown and unexpectedly high inflation figures in December. This bleak economic data from China, showing a growth rate of 5.2%—one of its lowest in decades—exacerbated the market's downturn, particularly impacting the commodity-heavy index with its concentration of miners and oil companies.

Blanco also sheds light on the bond market, which experienced a sell-off as the two-year bond yield spiked by 21 basis points. This shift, marking the first positive inflation reading since February 2023, signals potential challenges in central bank policymaking.

He also discusses comments from Christine Lagarde at the World Economic Forum in Davos, which indicated that the European Central Bank is unlikely to lower interest rates until late spring, pending data on wage pressures.

Blanco also points out the historically low, yet rising, volatility index (VIX), which hit a two-month high due to market turmoil, compounded by geopolitical tensions that contribute to "quite a sombre outlook overall for the markets."
