Google staff told to expect further job cuts

Google boss Sundar Pichai has reportedly warned staff that the search engine giant will cut more jobs over the coming year.

Reductions will be made on top of the 12,000 jobs Google cut last year, with staff being told of what to expect in an internal memo, according to online publication The Verge.

“We have ambitious goals and will be investing in our big priorities this year,” the chief executive wrote.

“The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices.”

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) subsidiary Google had reduced its headcount last year within the likes of its advertising, search, maps and YouTube departments as part of an efficiency drive.

Roles in the technology giant’s hardware, shopping, policy and engineering teams were also hit.

Many of the new layoffs have already been announced, Pichai added, though “some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed”.

“These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions and will not touch every team,” he said.
