Sheryl Sandberg announced plans to leave the Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:FB) board of directors in May in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
The former chief operating officer joined Facebook in 2008 and was named to its board in 2012.
“With a heart filled with gratitude and a mind filled with memories, I let the Meta board know that I will not stand for reelection this May,” Sandberg wrote.
In June 2022, Sandberg stepped down as Meta’s COO following controversy over privacy abuses as well as the spread of conspiratorial content and disinformation on its platforms.
She was succeeded by Javier Olivan, then Meta’s chief growth officer.
“Under Mark [Zuckerberg]’s leadership, Javi Olivan, Justin Osofsky, Nicola Mendelsohn, and their teams have proven beyond a doubt that the Meta business is strong and well-positioned for the future, so this feels like the right time to step away,” Sandberg wrote.
“Going forward, I will serve as an advisor to the company, and I will always be there to help the Meta teams,” she added.
Shares of Facebook slid 0.1% in extended trading Wednesday.
